I have a quick post for you today because it is very similar to the one I posted last Friday. In order to continue the ampersand motif and also to help guests with directions, I knew I wanted to create signs for the wedding. The venue is located in a semi rural part of Apex and therefore it is hard to know which road to turn down if you haven’t previously been to the property. Once you do turn down the street, it is a little drive to get to the actual driveway. Probably why they call it Hidden Haven and the property is 23 acres so I can’t just tell guest it is directly across the Waffle House… luckily. ;)
There are numerous wooden wedding signs floating around Pinterest and the blogosphere but I wanted to do something different, more modern and of course more colorful! I pulled my inspiration from this TomandJessFest sign, so cute! I designed five signs to be place on the main street and around the venue. I then used my awesome sauce printer and printed the signs on 13″ x 19″ poster board. Not everyone will have a fancy printer or owns a small stationery design biz so you can also get a local printer or Kinko’s to print the signs for you. Once printed, I used the spray adhesive to attach the poster boards to foam board and then simply used my x-acto knife and a long ruler to cut out the signs. My signs are 5″ high by 15″ wide so on the smaller side but still viewable from a car. I found metal sign stakes at Lowes for $.98 each and decided to use them rather than wood stakes for an easier install.

Sorry for the rough pictures, I some how cannot find the time to edit my pictures anymore… wonder why? :) My plan is to add ribbon to the bottom or top of the signs to add a little something extra. Of course you will have to wait until after the wedding to see pictures of the signs in use. Here is an update to the list of DIYs:
THE DIY LIST:
1. perforated metal hurricanes
2. foam directional signs
3. sand/concrete buckets with poles for cafe string lights
4. ribbons oh my!
5. bunting or tassels for cake background decor
6. groomsmen boutonnieres
7. fabric table runners
8. ampersand for bride & groom chairs
9. succulents planted in mercury votives
I still have the ribbons oh my DIY project to share however it is still not ready for prime time but I plan to work on it this week. I also have included a link above to the succulents planted in mercury glass containers DIY sneak peak! I set up a mock table this weekend to see how everything would look together just in case it didn’t come out like I had been envisioning. Good news: it came out even better! I am thrilled with the look and can’t wait to see it on our actual day. Speaking of mock trials… I went to my hair and makeup trial this weekend, put on my wedding dress and a good friend sweetly agreed to take a few pictures at the NC Art Museum. I am so happy with that look too. eeeee! So much excitement and anticipation. … and Craig is happy because the Giants won on Sunday… and surely excited about our wedding so soon too. What are you happy about on this Wedding Friday Monday? :)

I have another lovely wedding DIY to share today. After today we have four more Fridays left until the wedding. Holy how did that happen?! I will try to do my best to post the remaining DIY projects and last minute updates leading up to our wedding. The wedding invitations have gone out and I hope to have pictures to share in a few weeks. Now on to the crafty goodness! I wanted to create an ampersand to hang between Craig’s and my chair at the wedding. For those who don’t know, an ampersand is a fancy “and” and a motif that we are carrying through out our wedding.
Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures while creating this DIY project so you will have to bare with me as I explain the steps. It is really quite simple actually but does take some patience. The first step was to print a large ampersand on an 8.5″ x 11″ paper and use spray glue to adhere it to a foam board. Once firmly attached, I took an x-acto knife and cut around the shape and foam board. This is where the patience comes in. ;) Once the ampersand was completely cut out I was left with not the prettiest of edges so I then used a hot glue gun to attach white ribbon around the edges. The next step was to print a reflection or flipped ampersand on another piece of paper, carefully cut it out and then glue it to the back of the ampersand. For the last step, I simply held the ampersand at the height I wanted it between two chairs and tied ribbon to each side and then a loop for the chair. I am very happy with how the finished ampersand turned out and think it will look really cute between our chairs against the white table cloth at the wedding. It’s definitely not perfect, no DIY is ;), but since no one will be be analyzing it closely it will be just fine.

In other DIY List updates, Craig’s sweet mom has agreed to sew the fabric table runners for our wedding! The runners will be sewn from the same teal chevron fabric that was a feature of our wedding invitations. They will add a pop of graphic teal to the white linens. I am super thankful to have her help on this DIY because time is running short before the big day. I promise to share pictures of the table runners and a few quick tips to making your own table runners after the wedding. Another project that I can cross off the DIY list is the bunting or tassel for cake background decor. I decided that the simplicity of a beautiful backyard is all that is needed and that I want the cake to be the main focus, not the decoration. I will have a teal chevron runner under the white milk glass cake stand with a few ribbon touches to add color to the white buttercream wedding cake. Here is an updated DIY List.
THE DIY LIST:
1. perforated metal hurricanes
2. foam directional signs
3. sand/concrete buckets with poles for cafe string lights
4. ribbons oh my!
5. bunting or tassels for cake background decor
6. groomsmen boutonnieres
7. fabric table runners
8. ampersand for bride & groom chairs
9. succulents planted in mercury votives
I plan to share the foam directional signs and ribbons oh my project next week. So much to do and less than 28 days left of time! :)

I am happy to report that my second DIY went much better than my first DIY attempt. For my second DIY, I set my sights on tackling the perforated metal hurricanes that I love so much from West Elm. Even on clearance the small lantern is $16 and the large $34 which can easily break the bank if you want to use a multiple lanterns for your ceremony and reception decor. For the ceremony, I want to use one or two on either side of the aisle at the back row of seats and then another one or two on both sides at the front row of seats. For the reception, I would like the 6 from the ceremony to be placed around the pool with 8 additional lanterns. Have I mentioned I like these lanterns, a lot, like really a lot?! So pretty. If you did some quick math, that would be upwards of $400 for lanterns, craziness!

This DIY is simply to save money and who knows maybe I will be able to sell the lanterns after we use them and get some of our investment back. I do plan to keep a few for our one day backyard as I think they will be happiness to look at and remember our wedding day.
Now, on to the how to’s for this project. This DIY was surprisingly easy and the final product looks amazing if I do say so myself. :) On one of my many trips to Lowe’s Hardware (I spend too much time and money in this store – just ask Craig), I spotted sheets of aluminum in fun patterns. Originally intended for radiator covers or such, I immediately thought of my beloved metal lanterns. So on the supply list for this DIY is the following: 1. cloverleaf aluminum sheets or any pattern you like, Lowe’s has a lot of options 2. steel straight snips – borrow from a friend 3. glass cylinders 4. screws, nuts and washers. That’s it!

I purchased the glass cylinders as a template guide for making the lanterns perfectly round and to also protect the open flame from grass during the ceremony. No one wants a fire to start during a wedding ceremony unless it is the fire that burns for the marriage, too cheesy? Sorry. Back on task, I don’t plan to use glass hurricane vases or cylinders for the lanterns that will surround the pool so that will be cost saving.

First step is to measure for your pieces of metal by using the classic math formula, circumference = diameter x pi. Sorry to make you do math two times in a blog post, nerdy Janine. ;) Once you figure out how long you need a piece to wrap around the cylinder then you can determine how tall you want your lanterns. I just figured out how to get the most out of one sheet of metal. The 24″ x 36″ sheet of metal that I bought at Lowe’s for $26 allowed me to make three lanterns and one small votive holder. Mark where to cut with a sharpie and then use your steel straight snips to cut out the metal. The metal cuts surprisingly easy with the proper snips but I do recommend wearing gloves because it will be sharp.

Next you will curl the metal around the class hurricane vase and overlap the two ends. Join the ends by placing a screw with washer through two holes that line up and then tighten a nut on the other side. I used two screws per lantern, one on the top and another on the bottom, but bigger lanterns might need a third in the middle. The next step is there is no next step! How awesome is that?! You can slip your metal lantern over a glass cylinder or leave it bare if you aren’t concerned about fires.

I simply love how the lanterns turned out and I think they look very similar to the inspiration image. The total cost for three lanterns with glass cylinders was $46.10 which comes out to $15 per lantern. That includes three different sizes and a small votive holder. If you don’t use the glass cylinders then the price would be $9 per lantern. A much better price then the original metal lanterns and an overall savings of $250 for 14 lanterns. That leaves a lot of moolah for more DIYs, yay!
THE DIY LIST:
1. perforated metal hurricanes
2. foam directional signs
3. sand/concrete buckets with poles for cafe string lights
4. ribbons oh my!
5. bunting or tassels for cake background decor
6. groomsmen boutonnieres
7. fabric table runners
8. ampersand for bride & groom chairs
9. succulents planted in mercury votives
I will leave you with another project crossed off the list and hope to see you soon with another DIY to share. Have you worked on any fun projects recently? Did you participate in the Pinterest Challenge from YHL? I should have submitted this as a Pinterest inspired DIY.

I have progress to share and another check mark on the old to do list! The ties for Craig and his groomsmen have been quite the on going deliberation. My original thought was to purchase silk ties that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses. Turns out it is pretty hard to find ties that match the exact color of the dresses. After months of searching I pretty much gave up on finding a coral necktie. While purchasing Carrie’s bridesmaid dress at a local bridal salon I happily fell in love with their Jean Yves Tango collection. The colors matched the bridesmaid’s dresses almost perfectly and were sunny, happy colors. The Tango neckties even came in a cute stripe that would match our wedding design. So I went back the following weekend to purchase the ties only to find out that they were not for sale but for rent. Who rents a tie?

The real question should be, who rents a tie for $12? Once again add another qualifier to the on going debate. I ended up doing my favorite hobby (besides my numerous other hobbies) and googled around until I found the ties available for purchase for $20 each. This was not an easy task even for a pro stalker googler like me. It was right before I called to purchase the ties that I was told that the neckties were pre-tied. I didn’t even really know what that meant but assumed it meant clip-on and hoped it meant just tied before hand and able to be untied. Off I went to the bridal store to check the ties out in person again. Unfortunately the first assumption was correct and the ties are in fact clip-ons. I wouldn’t have minded this fact if the guys were simply renting the ties but since we are buying the ties as part of their groomsmen gifts, it seemed very cheesy. So that months long trail led to another dead end but I wasn’t giving up without a fight. With a little searching I was able to find pindot ties in all the necessary colors on Amazon.com.

The ties were 100% silk for only $16 each, victory is mine! We ended up purchasing two of each color for the groomsmen and a red tie for Craig. When they were deliver I was really impressed with the quality and color. The plan is to have the groomsmen wear a tie color that is different from the bridesmaid’s dress that they will be walking with back down the aisle. That way they don’t look too matchy, matchy and like they are going to prom. ;) I am pretty happy about what we ended up with and glad I didn’t go with my first instinct. Don’t you just love when that happens?

Today, I thought I would share the first of my DIY adventures from the DIY List I posted two weeks ago. You can probably tell by the title that this DIY, like most, did not go as easily as I thought. Last weekend with the help of a few tutorials on fabric boutonnieres, I headed off to Joann’s and Michaels to get my supplies. I decide to make the flowers out of linen, buy fake leaves and cover sticks with florist tape to look like stems. Easy peasy, right? I was so happy that I found a soft red linen to match Kristin’s bridesmaid dress and lots of colorful ribbon to tie around the “stems”. I only bought the fabric for one boutonniere just to test things out before committing too much money.
In terms of money, my goal was to spend way less than $154 to create 11 boutonnieres (6 groomsmen, 2 fathers and 3 grandfathers). Craig’s boutonniere is already included in our florist contract for $14 to match my bouquet. So for less than $40 in supplies and on my way home, I was feeling pretty good about this project. After taking the picture below I was confident that, yes, this is going to be beautiful. I thought, not only am I saving $100 but our boutonnieres are going to turn out so pretty that it will be worth the time then to just pay the florist. They will look exactly like this one, right?

Whomp, whomp. Not exactly. After cutting out a few layers of petals, I realized that the fabric was fraying pretty not cute like so out came the Mod Podge. My first time ever using the stuff, pretty surprising, huh? I read that if you spread an even, thin layer on the back of the fabric it would stop the fraying. Awesome sauce, that’s the solution, right? (All together now, “not exactly”.) The Mod Podge made the fabric really stiff and not sweet and soft like I wanted the flowers. It also left the back of the fabric very glossy and I will take the fraying over that. Back to the previous petals and it was on to trying to make this thing look like a flower instead of a pile of scrap fabric. I tried and tried but could not get the flower to cup and be a cute little bud like my inspiration image. After $40, 4 hours and loads of frustration, I was able to produce one fugly boutonniere. Now in supply terms, I probably only spent $4 on this one boutonniere and had leftovers to make more but still, could I guarantee that they would look better? not take as much time? and I still have to buy fabric for the other colors. buggers.

So I weighed my choices… If I cut out each petal individually, sew them together and put clear nail polish on the edge to stop fraying, I could possibly get tight bulbs like my inspiration boutonniere. Or, I could email the florist tomorrow and add the boutonnieres to our contract and move on to other DIYs. Hmm… Then I saw that my florist was featured on a popular wedding blog, Style Me Pretty, and that her boutonnieres look like this beaut. Game over! Decision made. Because that, my friend, is one good looking boutonniere. It’s the Craig of boutonnieres if I want to get all cheesy on you. :)
At the end of the day, I am happy, Craig is happy and I am ready to tackle more DIYs having grown from this experience. That sounds like a solution to me. Janine: 1, DIY list: less one project!
THE DIY LIST:
1. perforated metal hurricanes
2. foam directional signs
3. sand/concrete buckets with poles for cafe string lights
4. ribbons oh my!
5. bunting or tassels for cake background decor
6. groomsmen boutonnieres
7. fabric table runners
8. ampersand for bride & groom chairs
9. succulents planted in mercury votives
On to the next project, wish me luck and leave comment loves! You might ask why I didn’t try to make the boutonniere look like the image from the DIY List. I think that design is really cute but wondered if my groomsmen would feel silly wearing a first place science fair like boutonniere. I know, I am silly like that. ;)

Since we are less than 3 months till the wedding day, it’s high time to start some DIY projects! For my grandmother: DIY stands for do-it-yourself and more often than not allows the DIYer to save some moolah. Not only will doing a lot of these projects cost less than purchasing off the shelves, it also allows for a lot of customization and will make our wedding unique to us. As a lover of lists and my infamous “weekend to-do lists”, I have, of course, created a list of DIYs for the wedding. My plan is to focus on one DIY per weekend and share the results/mishaps on this blog. With the help of my favorite new web tool, Pinterest, I have inspiration images to go along with my list.
THE DIY LIST:
1. perforated metal hurricanes
2. foam directional signs
3. sand/concrete buckets with poles for cafe string lights
4. ribbons oh my!
5. bunting or tassels for cake background decor
6. groomsmen boutonnieres
7. fabric table runners
8. ampersand for bride & groom chairs
9. succulents planted in mercury votives

Is your mind fluttering with do-it-yourself projects and happy inspirations now? If you have a Pinterest account, you can always follow my account for lovely inspiration and prettiness! I previously saved all my favorite images from the web in folders on my browser, so needless to say, Pinterest rocks my world. How do you find inspirational images? Blogs? Magazines? Perhaps art museums?

Why hello there lovely readers. I have a quick Wedding Fridays post for you this week as I am busy designing our actual wedding invitation suite. Yay! With a little over a month until these puppies need to hit the snail mail, it’s crunch time. Considering it took me 4 months of on and off working on our save the dates and that our wedding invitations have to top those, time is a ticking. The countdown to our wedding is on with it being in the double digits now – 98 days to go! The inspiration board for our wedding invitations includes the same beautiful teal and coral from our save the dates and wedding website. For a bit of more playfulness, I have added a sweet orange and joyful yellow to the color palette. Have I mentioned that I love color? I do! Chevron and stripes are still key graphic elements of our wedding invitation and I even found a wonderful fabric to add texture.

I know this is preaching to the choir but I have to sing it again! I am a firm believer that your wedding invitations are the first indication to guest about your celebration and definitely set the tone for the event. Just designing our wedding invitations is getting me very fired up about the big day and I hope when our guests receive the invitations they will be just as excited. That is all you get to see until late August when I will share the actual invitations. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

The title of this post is a bit misleading. The bridesmaids will not be wearing ties however I am happy to say that all of my bridesmaids have their dresses! :) I have also picked out ties for the groomsmen to match the bridesmaid dresses. We will give the ties to the groomsmen as part of their gift.
When I last updated on the bridesmaid dresses we just had one cute little check next to Loren’s dress and a sold out flower girl dress that I would have loved for Brianna. Fast forward to 6 months later (holy cow has it been that long already?) to this week and we have slowly but surely found beautiful dresses for all my beautiful ladies! Jen’s dress was the next dress that we found after deciding on Loren’s dress and the colors. We got lucky once again and found a new Lela Rose bridesmaid dress in buttercup on ebay for $75! Amazing as this dress retails for $250. Jen will have to get a few alterations done to the dress but it should still come in way less than retail price. The yellow color is beautiful and almost cantaloupe (as Jen has coined it) and the fabric it so pretty. This dress is going to look stunning on Jen’s gorgeous, tan self. For Kristin, we were looking for the perfect shade of red: not exactly apple red but a soft, rosy red . We managed to find a very lovely dress at the retail store she works at while in college. We ordered it online since they do not sell it in stores and with sales and free shipping got the dress for $60. The dress fit her “to a t” and has a similar feel to Jen’s dress with both having sheer fabric overlays. She plans to get a thin silver belt to add a little something extra to the simple but stunning dress.
That only left us with needing a dress for Carrie and my little sister Brianna. I was pretty much smitten with the fabric from the sold out J.Crew dress and thought it would have tied all the bridesmaid dresses together so perfectly. Almost too hooked on the dress that I had a hard time envisioning anything else. My stepmom, Janet, was very helpful and set out on a search to find something else for Brianna to wear. She even called J.Crew and had them put a search on any Claribel dress that might be found or returned. I continued to regularly search ebay and stalk the internet until I eventually found the same dress in a size 8. Unfortunately, the dress fit Brianna a little too snug and we worried she would out grow it by October. Sadness ensued. Then a few months later as I was wishfully shopping on J.Crew Factory online I came across a dress with the pattern, Golden Beach. The fabric was exactly the design I had fallen so hard for last fall! On hope and a prayer I went to the J.Crew Outlet in Mebane, NC and found a girl’s dress in my beloved pattern! Oh blissful day! For a little over $40 the adorable dress came home with me that day and will look so cute on Brianna on our wedding day. We are going to find a purple ribbon to tie around Bree’s waist to finish off the look.

As for Carrie’s bridesmaid dress, you may notice that I haven’t put a check mark yet. With my best friend living in Germany, it’s a bit harder than just buying a dress and hoping it fits. Through a week of back and forth emails, Carrie and I, have picked a sassy Cynthia Rowley dress in the Clementine color. Once she has confirmed she likes the fabric swatch being sent to her then I will purchase her dress along with all of the groomsmen’ ties. The ties are by Jean Yves Tango and are monochromatic striped to match the color of the girls’ dresses. Pulling from the guy’s gray suits, the girls will all have some shade of gray or silver shoes.
What are your thoughts on bridesmaid dresses being re-wearable? Do you have a favorite dress from a past wedding that you wear all the time or 7 bridesmaid dresses sitting in your closet?

I am back! Sorry for the major gap in posting this past month. I was super busy at work, with Janine Rae Design and I honestly didn’t do a whole lot of wedding planning. I did book our florist and am very excited about that decision although I had to leave the table flowers out of the contact because they weren’t within our budget. But have no fear, my plan is to go to the farmer’s market the week before our wedding and purchase a lot of wild flowers and dahlias similar to the bouquet I purchase last October. For those wondering which florist we chose, it was The English Garden in Raleigh. Cydney, the owner, was beyond sweet and really got excited about my vision. I fully believe that she will go above and beyond for our wedding because you can tell she truly loves what she does. It was very refreshing compared to another florist I met with that was quite rude when I told him my budget. I will stay classy and not mention names. :)
Another vendor that we booked was the transportation for our guests. This was something that was completely unnecessary and we probably could have saved the money to use elsewhere in the wedding budget. However, Craig and I love our family and friends and of course share their love for the adult beverages. :) So we wanted to provide this service to our guests to keep them all safe and also allow them to drink and have a good time. It kind of adds to the fun of the event too to have everyone ride over on the same minibus. I reached out to a few limo companies first to get quotes for minibuses and was pretty shocked at the prices. We expect about 60 or so out of town guests to stay at the hotel so a minibus would be the best method of transportation. My second attempt was to reach out to charter bus companies and to get quotes. Happy day, this was the golden ticket! The prices were much more in our price range. Therefore we went ahead and paid a deposit on a minibus to pick up our guests at the hotel one hour before the ceremony. The minibus will probably have to take two trips so the venue will have cold drinks on hand for those early guests. The bus will then bring everyone back to the hotel at the end of the night. A handful of our in town friends have mentioned getting a hotel room for the night so that they can truly enjoy themselves too. I think this is a wonderful idea and can’t wait to continue the party at the hotel with all our friends and family. I mean think about it: a $80 hotel room is a good deal when you compare it to the cost of a typical night out including a nice meal, drinks and cab ride home. Craig and I will ride on the minibus with everyone else so we do not need to book other forms of transportation for the day.
With the last of the vendors booked looks like I am on to the fun DIY details! Also, don’t worry: there won’t be a month gap in blog posts this time. I already have a new blog post loaded in the hopper for next week and it’s a good one… bridesmaids’ dresses updates and ties for the groomsmen! Less than 4 months!

My sisters and I were really looking forward to picking out the wedding cake vendor. What can I say, we love sweets! I made four appointments with bakeries each a week apart starting in late February. So yes, this post is well over due. ;) The first lady was based out of her home and after tasting her cakes at the Bridal show in January I knew I needed to make an appointment. But before I update you on all of our cake consultations, let’s recap what I would like in a wedding cake: our budget is on the lower side, simple, no fondant, minimal decorations, pedestal cake stand, and must taste amazing! Shouldn’t be hard to find, right? Actually, right! The first lady that we met with fit all the requirements however she was a bit hesitant about putting a cake that would feed 110 on a pedestal.
Next we met with the vendor that my friend, Jen, used for her wedding two summers ago. The cake tasted amazing however the price was a bit higher than we wanted to spend and she didn’t even mentioned a pedestal after I said I wanted one for my cake stand. The third vendor was located in Apex and 5 minutes from our venue but their quote was even higher and honestly I didn’t like the taste of their cakes. I am not a fan of mousse frosting at all. I am leaving out the names of each bakery because they might be right for some brides, just not for me, however if you want their information just send me an email. :)
On to the final consultation and obviously the best because this girl is not a DIY wedding cake girl, so it was time to make a decision. My best friend, Carrie, recommended I talk to Swank Cakes because knew the owner from when she worked at the coffee house and had purchased cakes from them before. She told me that they were very friendly and uber talented. I remember seeing their wedding cakes at the bridal show and thought that there is no way they will fit in my budget because their cakes are just so beautiful and intricate. As luck would have it they were perfectly in our budget and very confident that I could have my wedding cake on a milk glass cake stand! The sample wedding cake tasted amazing and we especially like the white chocolate buttercream. Even Craig got to try the samples and gave his seal of approval as did Bree, my little sister. We finalized the contract and sent in our deposit that week! Our wedding cake will be three tiered with the bottom tier being taller than the top two and with white chocolate buttercream in a vertical line pattern. The cake will be on the smaller size because I didn’t want a huge, fussy looking cake but don’t fret we will also have a kitchen cake that will serve 40 people so there will be plenty of cake. The decorations will be a ribbon, a coral dahlia and one or two red ranunculus on each tier. Nothing on the top so no cake topper and we don’t plan to save the top tier as our bakery offers a complementary anniversary cake.

With the actual cake decided on, I still had to find a 12″ diameter milk glass cake stand. I found a ton of vintage cake stands available on ebay for around $75 each and also found beautiful new cake stands for $200+, just look at these lovelies by Clara French. Knowing that our budget was on the lower side, I continued my search until I got an email from my step-grandmother. She had a vintage milk glass cake stand that was exactly 12″ without the scalloped lace border and was happy to give it to us for the wedding! The cake stand was perfectly what I was envisioning and also received Swank Cakes’ approval on size and sturdiness. Amazing! I couldn’t be happier! See it does pay off to share your wedding planning journey with the internet because family and friends are so willing to help and also the only ones that will read it. ;) Hehe, I kid. But enough jibber jabber, isn’t this cake stand beautiful?! I can’t wait to get some pretty ribbon to tie around the base.

For those of you counting, now that the wedding cake vendor has been booked along with the venue, photographer, DJ and minister that only leaves two major vendors to book for our wedding: the florist and transportation for our guests. I should be making the final decision on the florist and transportation this week so that only leaves all the fun, crafty details (I love those)! Let’s start a discussion: chocolate, vanilla or other when it comes to cake? Leave your choice in the comments! My vote is vanilla or carrot cake or red velvet, so yummy!
